Coercion!
Within the sculpture titled ‘Coercion!’ two abstract representations of a man and a woman stand in stark opposition. The man faces forward, while the woman, positioned in front of him, gazes backward, symbolizing a discordant union plagued by the insidious specter of forced marriage. This hideous phenomenon persists in various forms within the algebra of marriage. Some are compelled into unions devoid of love, their destinies dictated by familial pressures. Others succumb to matrimony to shield their families, navigating a coercive algorithm that dictates their life choices. Tragically, some unknowingly enter unions, constrained by the fear of societal judgment, condemning them to a lifetime devoid of joy. ‘Coercion!’ serves as a poignant reflection on the complex and often distressing, intersections of societal expectations and personal autonomy within the institution of marriage.
